Italy is famous for their Cioccolato Caldo, especially during the fall and winter months when it turns cold outside. But not only the Italians love hot chocolate: 1785 - defintely a while ago - Thomas Jefferson was to become a great lover of hot chocolate too. In a letter to John Adams he wrote: "The superiority of chocolate, both for health and nourishment, will soon give it the same preference over tea and coffee in America which it has in Spain."
However, today not a lot of adults are used to drink a hot chocolate beside of a good coffee or espresso. Some coffee chain companies tried to reintroduce the hot chocolate to us here in the states, but failed to convince the customers. The real hot chocolate is made rather with milk, not water.It contains a high percentage of cocoa. And it provides a hint of bitterness in the hot chocolate taste which is paired and overlayed with the unique sweetness of brown sugar. This hint of bitterness even survives 5 table spoons sugar or more.
Beside of classical professional recipes where you need first to melt a brick of dark bitter chocolate to produce the hot chocolate (who has the time and wants to clean the kitchen later?), Danesi sells a nice ready to go chocolate ground, which only needs hot milk and either boiled or steamed milk and a little bit stiring.
